<image:title>Scholar Spotlight: AR - Scholar Spotlight: Alan Rivas</image:title>
<image:caption>"My desire for wanting to study law goes back to the first inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009. I had the honor of being present with my high school's marching band. Since that day, I knew I would dedicate my life to fighting to resolve racial and social inequalities in this country." Alan Rivas’ path to his final semester at Alabama State University has been longer than most. Recently celebrating his 29th birthday, his college journey began at ASU in 2011, where he shared his musical talent as a member of the Mighty Marching Hornet Band. After a few semesters, Alan paused his studies to join the Army National Guard, eventually transitioning to active duty and serving at Ft. Bliss (TX). After six years of service, he returned to Montgomery, AL, to finish what he started. As a student leader, Alan now serves as a member of the university’s programs and activities board, seeking to attract students to programs that aim to empower, educate, and uplift. He will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree and join the ~32% of veterans with a bachelor's degree or above*. Why Law School? With interests in civil rights and international law, Alan wants to use his legal education to challenge systems that keep people who look like him oppressed. He has a deep interest in mental health and youth advocacy and believes that the skills he’ll receive in law school will help him change the landscape of support services for young African American and Latino students. Career Goals Alan doesn’t waver in his answer when asked about his post-law school plans. “I’m going to be an entrepreneur.” He’s already developed a concept for one of his first businesses and expects to leave a legacy focused on fortifying minds so that people from marginalized communities have the tools and knowledge to be successful. He plans to apply for law school in the fall and begin his studies in the Fall of 2023. *Enrolling More Veterans at High-Graduation-Rate Colleges and Universities - Ithaka S+R</image:caption>

<image:title>Scholar Spotlight: HH - Scholar Spotlight: Haleigh Hoskins</image:title>
<image:caption>“As a student at WashU School of Law, I plan to share my experiences and provide a listening ear to others, hoping our collective and diverse experiences can give the legal curriculum a richer context for understanding and discussion.” Haleigh has known for a while that she would be an attorney. After graduating from Spelman College, Haleigh started looking at law schools that would be a good fit and keep her close to family, and WashU quickly rose to the top of the list. After a tumultuous year which included the death of her grandmother and a severe illness that led to her mother being hospitalized (the two women who raised her), Haleigh made the difficult decision to put her law schools plans on hold. Since then, her story has read like something out of a movie. After taking a few months to regroup, Haleigh enrolled in a Master of Public Policy program at Northwestern University, which aligned well with her interest in civil rights interests and allowed her to stay close to home while her mother continued to recover. While enrolled, she secured a role working for the Mayor’s Office in Chicago, where she worked on projects seeking to address racial issues from a “top-down” approach. She then was awarded a fellowship by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which gave her more experience in civil rights, this time addressing federal drug sentencing disparities for mainly Black inmates in an attempt to overturn wrongful convictions and reunite individuals with their families. While this work aligns with her advocacy passions, she longs to take a bottom-up approach—one that will educate individuals on their rights in their communities and workplaces. Both of these experiences deepened her desire to return to her original goal of becoming an attorney who bridges the community with the justice system through education. Why Law School? While at Spelman, Haleigh spent one of her spring break’s traveling to Ferguson, MO to register citizens to vote shortly after the death of Michael Brown. During the trip, she was able to gain a deeper understanding of civil rights issues affecting the justice system. This spark was further fueled by a trip abroad to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she recognized the lack of legal knowledge among Black Argentines. After returning from her travels, she became a proponent of educational accessibility, desiring to change the world through civil rights advocacy. For Haleigh, becoming a civil rights attorney was the next logical step in a journey that started in her hometown of Peoria, IL. The Impact of Coaching While Haleigh was still enrolled in her Master's program, she realized that she had to double down and begin preparing for the gauntlet of the law school admissions process. Haleigh took the advice of one of her close friends and reached out to Ware PLC for support on her road to law school. Haleigh started her coaching journey in April of 2021, seeking assistance with re-taking the LSAT, re-thinking her approach to her application documents, and ultimately desiring motivation to enroll at a high-ranked law school on scholarship. After months of hard work, Haleigh received multiple acceptances (with scholarships) and will attend her original first choice - the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis (ranked #16). Haleigh credits coaching with providing the support she needed to reach her goals, and that’s only the beginning. Next Steps Haleigh applied for and received a Law Fellowship from SEO, the only program of its kind to offer talented incoming law school students of color the opportunity to work at a top law firm during the summer before law school. Haleigh is currently participating in a 10-week, paid summer internships with one of the top firms in the country, WilmerHale. All this from a young woman who was once told “I don’t think you’ll make a very good attorney. Actually, I don’t think you should go to law school.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Scholar Spotlight: QW - Scholar Spotlight: Quentin Warren</image:title>
<image:caption>“I decided to pursue law school after 30 because I’m at a point in my life where I’ve done alot of the things I’ve wanted to do and saw an opportunity to do more. I had many conversations with family and friends about pigeon-holing ourselves. Just because you’ve done most of your adult life one way, doesn’t mean you can’t do something else or add on to your identity. We only live once. I’ve always had an interest in studying law, so I figured there is no time like the present… also, a two-year pandemic wreaking havoc on the performance industry may have helped. Haha” Quentin Warren doesn’t fit in any box. A black man, born in England, reared in Michigan and baptized in black excellence as a fine arts graduate of Howard University, he has held many titles in the past, including singer/actor/songwriter/actor and producer. Soon, he’ll add to that list as an “artist-lawyer”, combining his boundless artistic talent with a desire to lead, serve and advocate for others. When Q arrived at Howard University to study acting, he met a professor named Henri Edmonds. “Every day she would shout at us in the hallways of the Fine Arts department: “Business Show! it’s called show business, but you must remember to make it BUSINESS SHOW!” That was Mama Edmonds’ famous mantra. It was her way of making the students understand that you must remember to treat your art as a business first. While true that he most recently released an acclaimed single (with a music video that you can watch below), weeks later he finds himself studying late nights at the law library at Southwestern Law school. That’s 7,000+ miles away from where he recorded the song and spent the last 5 years of his life primarily in acting roles. After applying to law school in the Winter of 2021, Quentin decided to return to Los Angeles and chose Southwestern Law because of its offerings in entertainment law and because they offer a 2 year accelerated JD program (which is why he began in this summer) Why Law School? In 2020, after 10+ years in the entertainment industry, Quentin noticed an uptick in the discourse online and within the artist community about unfairness in the entertainment industry. Perpetually, black artists are marginalized in investment, opportunities, and contract deals, especially when compared to their white counterparts. This national dialogue exposed industry standards that have been in effect for far too long and have benefited only particular players in show business. After researching, he found that of all the current bar-certified lawyers, only 5% of them are black. He couldn't help but connect this fact with the existing discrepancies apparent in the industry. This served as a the final sign Quentin needed to add another feather to his flock - as an entertainment attorney. Career Goals Quentin wants to take his “business show” journey to the next level. He wants to be in the room of decision-makers, negotiating better deals for other artists like him and teaching artists how to be “business showmen” for themselves. As an “artist-lawyer,” he envisions hosting regular clinics for artists to attend where they can learn about their rights and voice their concerns related to policy standards of operation in entertainment areas of commerce. He wants to lead the charge to educate artists about navigating the legality of owning and monetizing their art. As an entertainment attorney, Quentin desires to work with entertainment unions like BMI and SAG-AFTRA to modify current standards to better benefit the artists, specifically artists of color. Education and advocacy are the mechanisms he wants to use to shift the paradigm. “The more informed we are as artists, the less the industry can abuse and take advantage of our contributions to this multi-billion dollar industry.”</image:caption>
