Scholar Spotlight: Alan Rivas

"My desire for wanting to study law goes back to the first inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009. I had the honor of being present with my high school's marching band. Since that day, I knew I would dedicate my life to fighting to resolve racial and social inequalities in this country."

Alan Rivas’ path to his final semester at Alabama State University has been longer than most. Recently celebrating his 29th birthday, his college journey began at ASU in 2011, where he shared his musical talent as a member of the Mighty Marching Hornet Band. After a few semesters, Alan paused his studies to join the Army National Guard, eventually transitioning to active duty and serving at Ft. Bliss (TX). After six years of service, he returned to Montgomery, AL, to finish what he started.

As a student leader, Alan now serves as a member of the university’s programs and activities board, seeking to attract students to programs that aim to empower, educate, and uplift. He will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree and join the ~32% of veterans with a bachelor's degree or above*.

Why Law School?

With interests in civil rights and international law, Alan wants to use his legal education to challenge systems that keep people who look like him oppressed. He has a deep interest in mental health and youth advocacy and believes that the skills he’ll receive in law school will help him change the landscape of support services for young African American and Latino students.

Career Goals

Alan doesn’t waver in his answer when asked about his post-law school plans. “I’m going to be an entrepreneur.” He’s already developed a concept for one of his first businesses and expects to leave a legacy focused on fortifying minds so that people from marginalized communities have the tools and knowledge to be successful.

He plans to apply for law school in the fall and begin his studies in the Fall of 2023.
